Alpha Vinimay to build 1 multipurpose dry cargo berth at Kandla Port in 2 years
Alpha Vinimay Pvt. Ltd has won a contract from the Kandla Port Trust (KPT) to build one of the proposed four multipurpose dry cargo berths (Berth No. 13) on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
To be constructed over 2 years, the berth will enable the Major Port to handle an additional two million tonnes of dry cargo every year.
Alpha Vinimay proposes to invest Rs 189 crore to develop the berth in 18 to 24 months from the date of award of the concession, and run it for a contract period of 30 years.
As per the tendering rules, KPT will entrust construction of the three other berths to different concessionaires.
KPT opened the bids on September 9 and decided on the winner on September 15.
KPT had invited price bids for the construction of four dry cargo berths atRs 755 crore on build-operate-transfer and revenue-sharing basis. It will now decide on the concessionaire for the other 3 berths in a few months.
KPT will get 31.62 per cent of the revenue and Alpha Vinimay the balance.
KPT has 10 dry cargo berths, two container berths and six oil jetties. It also has, in the Gulf of Kutch, three single-point moorings and one oil jetty at Vadinar.
In 2008-09, these facilities handled 72.22 million tonnes of cargo. Between April 1 and September 16, 2009, they handled 36 million tonnes.
The handling capacity of the 10 dry cargo berths is 13 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), against which they have handled 20.72 mtpa, resulting in berth occupancy of as high as 85 per cent in general.
By 2013-14, the Port is expected to experience a shortfall of 19.74 mtpa in handling of dry cargo. KPT, therefore, decided to build more berths.
