S. S. Hussain elected IPA Chairman
Mr S. S. Hussain, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), has been elected Chairman of Indian Ports Association (IPA), the body of Major Ports in the country.
In its meeting held in New Delhi on July 24, the governing body of IPA unanimously elected Mr Hussain as the IPA Chairman. He succeeds Dr A. K. Chanda, whose term as Chairman of Kolkata Port Trust ended in June this year.
Mr Hussain, who took over as Chairman of JNPT on March 16, 2007, is currently the senior-most amongst the Chairmen of Major Port Trusts. He had held senior positions in the government of Maharashtra before assuming charge as JNPT Chairman.
The Chairmanship of IPA thus comes to JNPT after a gap of three years. Mr Ravi Budhiraja was the last JNPT Chairman to become the IPA Chairman in 2003 for a period of about three years.
The 11 Major Port Trusts and the first corporatised Major Port, Ennore Port Ltd, are members of IPA.
IPA was conceived and constituted by the Major Ports under the Societies Registration Act in 1966 with the prime objective of developing and increasing efficiency and productivity in Ports by improving their working environment.
The Governing Body of IPA comprises the Chairmen of all Major Ports functioning under the regulatory control of the Union Ministry of Shipping.
The Chairman of the Association is elected from amongst the Major Port Chairmen, while the Secretariat of the IPA is headed by the Managing Director who operates from New Delhi.
